Radar Systems

 


Comlab has over 15 years of experience in radar technology. It all started with the design and development of state-of-the-art telecommunications training systems for Lab-Volt Inc, which includes a patented analog and digital radar training system with tracking, jamming, RCS and phased-array antenna add-ons. These award-winning systems, safe to operate in the classroom, are exported to over 20 countries.

 

It then developed specialized radars for the Canadian Coast Guard and the Canadian Space Agency. It designed, as a sub-contractor for Amphitech Systems, part of an obstacle warning system for army helicopters and sea-surface search radar for submarines. Comlab also provided the Canadian Department of National Defence with feasibility studies for the development of highly sophisticated radars and is currently building advanced prototypes.

 

In 2001, the NATO Maintenance & Supply Agency (NAMSA) awarded Comlab a contract to develop a Miniature Test Radar (CL 6110) to test its mobile test equipment in its Luxemburg lab. Since then, the US Air Force (84th Radar Evaluation Squadron) also purchased an MTR, and several civilian aviation authorities, as well as military Air Traffic / Air Defence organizations around the world, are considering the system.

 

 

 

MINIATURE TEST RADAR (MTR)

Long Range Air Traffic/Air Defence Radars usually have extensive self-testing capability. But over long periods of time, their analog components will inevitably experience a “graceful degradation”, which cannot be detected by the Built-In Test Equipment. Radar maintenance teams must therefore travel periodically from site-to-site in order to measure if any degradation has occurred. This is usually accomplished using both conventional and custom test equipment. Typical tests generally include transmit antenna patterns, receiver calibration and bandwidth, and receive antenna measurements.

 

Since the test equipment may travel extensively, it is subject to shipping damage and decalibration. In the past, there was no convenient way to check its operation and calibration once it returned to the lab. Comlab’s low-power MTR (CL 6110) allows safe in-lab measurements from only a couple of meters.

 

The MTR may also be used to safely train personel on operation of the test sets, without having to take down any operational radar. Since Comlab’s MTR form factor is based on the award-winning Lab-Volt Generic Pulse Radar Training System, other modules of the Lab-Volt system can be added to the MTR in order to obtain a real, short-range 10 GHz radar training system perfectly suited for classroom use.

 

Comlab’s products can also be customized to specific customers’ needs. For example, Comlab adapted its MTR in order to make it fully compatible with Intersoft Electronics' RASS (Radar Analysis Support System) test set.

RADAR TRAINING SYSTEM

Lab-Volt's Radar Training System (LV 8096) allows safe hands-on radar training in the classroom or laboratory through the use of a unique, fully-functional radar system. The lab-size, ultra-short-range, pulse-Doppler radar system allows more effective education in radar than was ever possible before, because students/personnel experiment with a real radar system to observe actual operation and learn concepts and principles of different types of radar (pulsed, Doppler and FMCW).

Topics like range-gate pull off, noise jamming, ECM, ECCM, stealth technology and reduced RCS are easily set up and demonstrated with the equipment, and correlated courseware provides step-by-step exercise procedures that guide students/personnel through the learning process.
