Our mission is to provide innovative solutions to problems in diverse industries through the application of RF technologies.
Comlab Telecommunications Inc. (Comlab) is a private Canadian company founded in 1984 by two Electrical Engineering professors and two graduate students of Laval University. Its head office and R&D laboratories are located in Quebec City, and the production facility is located in Trois-Rivières.
Comlab’s team is composed of experienced RF, software and product engineers, and highly qualified technicians. The company takes pride in developing highly integrated RF devices for Government and commercial customers who require advanced capabilities in telecommunications, antennas, microwaves and radars. Among recent research contracts were: a cross-polarized radar for the Canadian Coast Guard, a guidance radar for the Canadian Space Agency and a surveillance radar for the Department of National Defence. Over the years, Comlab has evolved from an R&D firm to an engineering firm, developing customized innovative products to better suit its customer's specific needs. For example, Comlab developed for Bombardier Inc. a microwave data transmission system for use on the Boston subway system as well as radar test sets for the NATO Maintenance & Supply Agency and US Air Force.
Both of Comlab’s sites have sophisticated RF equipment that can operate up to 26 GHz, as well as machinery to assemble ultra-miniature components (standard or RF) on printed circuit boards. This has allowed Comlab to develop and manufacture several RF components including a 10-GHz Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) and a miniature microwave power sensor. These components are used as parts of Comlab’s highly integrated systems, but are also sold separately.
The company’s initial efforts were mainly devoted to the design and development of state-of-the-art telecommunications training systems for Lab-Volt Ltd. As such, an analog and digital communications system, a microwave technology system, an analog and digital telephony system, an antenna technology system and a radar system were successfully brought to market. These systems, exported to over 20 countries, were granted patents for the core technology and have earned several awards. With over 20 years of partnership, Comlab is still enhancing Lab-Volt’s existing products and undertaking the development of new ones.
Among Comlab’s other outstanding accomplishments is the development, for Davicom Technologies Inc., of a complete line of remote Monitoring, Alarm & Control (MAC) systems for radio, TV and wireless transmission sites. These systems have been sold to prestigious clients like the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Bell Mobility, and the British Broadcasting Corporation. In 2001, Comlab took over full control of the production and sale of Davicom products, as well as the Scientel line of broadcast interface products.
